বৃটিশ শাসন আমল থেকেই নারায়ণগঞ্জ প্রাচ্যের ডান্ডি হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি লাভ করে আসছিল। তৎকালীণ নারায়ণগঞ্জ মহকুমার অন্তর্গত ০৩ (তিন) টি পুলিশ ষ্টেশন, নারায়ণগঞ্জ সদর, ফতুল্লা, সিদ্ধিরগঞ্জকে নিয়েই নারায়ণগঞ্জ সদর উপজেলার সৃষ্টি যা ১৯৮৬ সালের ১৪ই সেপ্টেম্বর তারিখে গঠিত হয়।
