১৯৫৩ সালে  ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় প্রথম বাংলা একাডেমী প্রতিষ্ঠার উদ্যোগ গ্রহণ করে, কিন্তু তা ব্যর্থ হয়। পরের বছর পূর্ববাংলা আইনসভার নির্বাচনে বিজয়ী  যুক্তফ্রন্ট পূর্ব ঘোষণা অনুযায়ী বাংলা একাডেমী প্রতিষ্ঠার পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণ করে, কিন্তু অল্পদিনেই তাদের পতন হওয়ায় সে প্রচেষ্টাও ব্যর্থ হয়। দ্বিতীয়বার যুক্তফ্রন্ট ক্ষমতায় আসার পর মুখ্যমন্ত্রী আবু হোসেন সরকার ১৯৫৫ সালের ৩ ডিসেম্বর ঐতিহাসিক বর্ধমান হাউসে (স্থাপিত ১৯০৬) বাংলা একাডেমীর উদ্বোধন করেন। এভাবে বাংলা ভাষার মর্যাদা ও অধিকার প্রতিষ্ঠার আন্দোলন বাংলা একাডেমী প্রতিষ্ঠার মাধ্যমে বাস্তব রূপ লাভ করে।

The Bangla Academy is an autonomous institution funded by the Bangladesh government to foster the Bengali language, literature and culture, to develop and implement national language policy and to do original research in the Bengali language. Established in 1955, it is located in Burdwan House in Ramna,  Dhaka, within the grounds of the University of Dhaka and Suhrawardy Udyan. The Bangla Academy hosts the annual Ekushey Book Fair. The importance of establishing an organisation for Bengali language was first emphasised by the linguist Muhammad Shahidullah.  Later, following the Language movement, on 27 April 1952, the All Party National Language Committee decided to demand establishment of an organisation for the promotion of Bengali language. During the 1954 parliamentary elections, the United Front's 21-point manifesto stated that, "The prime minister from the United Front will dedicate the Bardhaman House for establishing a research center for the Bengali language".  Following the election success of the Front, the education minister Syed Azizul Haque placed the order to fulfill this promise.

In 1955, the government formed a committee to expedite the process. The committee was composed of leading intellectuals like Muhammad Shahidullah,  Qazi Motahar Hossain, S. M. Bhattacharya, W. H. Shadani, and Muhammad Barkatullah. On 3 December 1955, the Chief Minister of East Bengal,  Abu Hussain Sarkar, inaugurated the institute.  Barkatullah acted as the Special Officer in charge. Later, in 1956,  Muhammad Enamul Haque took over as the first director.

In 1957, an act of the parliament formally established the funding source and the Government support for the institute.  The first book published by the academy was Laili Maznu, an epic by the medieval poet Dawlat Ujir Bahram Khan, and edited by Ahmed Sharif. The first fellow of the academy was the poet Farrukh Ahmed.

The publication division was established in early 1957; the research, culture and library divisions and translation division were set in 1958 and 1961 respectively.

After the independence of Bangladesh, the director's position was renamed Director General.  Mazharul Islam, head of Bangla Department of Rajshahi University, was the first Director General of the institute.  On 19 September 2008, a new 8-storied building, containing a 500-capacity auditorium and a 100-capacity seminar room, opened next to the main building.

To commemorate the Language movement and the Language martyr's day, the academy organizes the month-long Ekushey Book Fair, the largest book fair in the country. It was introduced by former director general Monzur-l-Mowla,
And recently they also organizes the 'Bisik Mela', which is specially done for the Boishak (The first month of bangla new year). So we went there recently!
This was an amazing Fair! Which was full of beautiful hand made and stationary things! And there also had rides! We loved it!

বাংলা একাডেমি হলো এমন একটা জায়গা যেখানে বাংলাদেশের জন্য ব্যবহৃত শব্দ গুচ্ছ গুলো নির্ধারণ করা হয়ে থাকে। অনেক সুন্দর একটা জায়গা। একুশে বইমেলার একটা অংশ সেখানে রয়েছে অনেক স্টল গুরলাম দেখলাম অনেক ভালো লাগল। দুপুরে খাবারটা বাংলা একাডেমি ক্যাফেটেরিয়ায় খাইলাম খাবার ভালো ছিল।খাবার গ্রহনের আগে টাকা দিয়ে খাবার নেওয়ার সিস্টেমটা ভালো লাগলো. ।

The Bangla Academy was established on 3 December 1955 (17 Agrahayan, 1372 Bengali).   This academy was established in the then East Pakistan (present day Bangladesh) for the purpose of practicing, researching and propagating Bengali language and literature.   The demand for the establishment of Bangla Academy arose in the post-Rashtrabhasha movement.   The headquarters of the academy was set up at the Burdwan House, the official residence of the then Prime Minister of East Pakistan.   The Academy has a "Language Movement Museum" in the "Burdwan House".

The Bangla Academy is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Culture, Government of Bangladesh.   The executive head of the academy has a director general.   Its first Director General was Mozharul Islam, who took charge on 2 June 1982.   The current Director General is Muhammad Nurul Huda. He took over on 12 July 2021.

Selina Hossain is the current President of Bangla Academy. On 3 February 2022, a notification was issued appointing her as the President.

বাংলা একাডেমি ১৯৫৫ খ্রিষ্টাব্দের ৩ ডিসেম্বর (১৭ অগ্রহায়ণ, ১৩৬২ বঙ্গাব্দ) প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়। বাংলা ভাষা ও সাহিত্যের চর্চা, গবেষণা ও প্রচারের লক্ষ্যে তৎকালীন পূর্ব পাকিস্তানে (বর্তমান বাংলাদেশে) এই একাডেমি প্রতিষ্ঠা করা হয়। রাষ্ট্রভাষা আন্দোলন-পরবর্তী কালের প্রেক্ষাপটে বাংলা একাডেমি প্রতিষ্ঠার দাবি ওঠে। তৎকালীন পূর্ব পাকিস্তানের প্রধানমন্ত্রীর সরকারি বাসভবন "বর্ধমান হাউজ"-এ এই একাডেমির সদর দপ্তর স্থাপিত হয়। একাডেমির "বর্ধমান হাউজে" একটি "ভাষা আন্দোলন জাদুঘর" আছে।

It's a great place when you go for boimela. I enjoy it. Any book lover will enjoy it. Boi mela is usually arranged at February, by targeting the international mother language day (21st February). The environment is just crowded with all the book lovers of the country.

Bangla Academy was established on December 3 of 1955. The activities of the Bangla Academy commenced with four divisions namely the Division of Research, Translation, Compilation & Publication and Culture. The Preparatory Committee formed six divisions through rearranging the divisions at the 10th meeting of the committee on 18.05.1957. The divisions are namely: 1) Research Division, 2) Translation Division, 3) Division of Compilation, 4) Division of Publication and Sale, 5) Division of Culture and 6) Library Division. After the Independence, the President of Bangladesh issued “The Bangla Academy Order 1972” on May 17 of 1972. It is through the “Bangla Academy Order 1972” that the divisions of the Academy were rearranged and a total number of seven divisions were formed. Those are namely: 1) Division of Administration, 2) Research and Compilation Division, 3) Translation Division, 4) Division of Culture, 5) Publication, Press and Sale Division, 6) Division of Textbook and 7) Folklore Division. Right now there are 08 divisions under the auspices of 08 Directors as per the new law (Act no. 33 of 2013 which has suspended the Bangla Academy Ordinance, 1978 and then endeavored to revise, amend and reenact the law). The Divisions are as follows:

1) Division of Research, Compilation and Dictionary and Encyclopedia, 2) Division of Translation, Textbook and International Relationship, 3) Division of Public Relations, ICT and Training, 4) Division of Sale, Marketing and Reprinting, 5) Division of Culture, Magazine and Auditorium, 6) Library, 7) Division of Folklore, Museum and Archives and 8) Division of Administration, Human Resources and Planning.

Every year in the month of February, Bangla Academy organised month long Amar Ekushey Book Fair. Here so many new book published from different writers.

Great place to explore Bengali literature and culture. It has a nice compound and a vast library where one can find quality books with various topics. One can buy books from there and the price is cheaper than other publications.

Nothing to describe. Well maintained, Amazing. Nice place. All types of hygiene properly maintained in Ekushey Book Fair 2022. Everyone's hands are sanitized with a sanitizer as they enter through the entrance. It’s really good.

Bangla Academy is famous for its arrangement of Boimela each year. Boimela takes place here every February of the year at the yard of Bangla Academy. Each year Bangla Academy publishes books of new writers after many selection processes. It also publishes books famous writers by Government funding.

বশীর আল-হেলালের মতে, বাংলা একাডেমির মতো প্রতিষ্ঠান স্থাপন ও সংগঠনের চিন্তা ড. মুহম্মদ শহীদুল্লাহ্ প্রথম করেন।[১] ড. শহীদুল্লাহ ৩১ ডিসেম্বর, ১৯৪৮ এ পূর্ব পাকিস্তান সাহিত্য সম্মেলনে ভাষা সংক্রান্ত একটি একাডেমি প্রতিষ্ঠার দাবি করেন।[২] এছাড়া দৈনিক আজাদ পত্রিকা বাংলা একাডেমি গঠনে জনমত সৃষ্টিতে ভূমিকা রাখে। ১৯৫২ সালের ২৯ এপ্রিল পত্রিকাটি "বাংলা একাডেমী" প্রতিষ্ঠার প্রয়োজনীয়তা জানিয়ে এ প্রসঙ্গে সম্পাদকীয় প্রকাশ করে। এ ব্যাপারে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় কর্তৃপক্ষ সে সময় কিছু প্রচেষ্টা নেয়।[২][৩] ১৯৫৪ সালে এ পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে প্রস্তাবও গ্রহণ করা হয়। কিন্তু অর্থাভাবে প্রস্তাবটি বাস্তবায়িত হয়নি। ১৯৫৪ সালে যুক্তফ্রন্ট গঠিত হলে শিক্ষামন্ত্রী সৈয়দ আজিজুল হক নির্দেশ দেন, [৩]

প্রধানমন্ত্রী বর্ধমান হাউজের বদলে অপেক্ষাকৃত কম বিলাসের বাড়িতে বাসস্থান নির্দিষ্ট করিবেন এবং বর্ধমান হাউজকে আপাতত ছাত্রাবাস ও পরে বাংলা ভাষার গবেষণাগারে পরিণত করা হইবে।

অবশেষে ১৯৫৫ সালে ৩ ডিসেম্বর পূর্ব পাকিস্তানের প্রধানমন্ত্রী আবু হোসেন সরকার উদ্‌বোধন করেন "বাংলা একাডেমি"। বাংলা একাডেমির প্রথম সচিব মুহম্মদ বরকতুল্লাহ। তার পদবি ছিল "স্পেশাল অফিসার"।[২] ১৯৫৬ সালে একাডেমির প্রথম পরিচালক নিযুক্ত হন অধ্যাপক ডক্টর মুহম্মদ এনামুল হক। বাংলা একাডেমির প্রথম প্রকাশিত বই আহমদ শরীফ সম্পাদিত দৌলত উজির বাহরাম খান রচিত লায়লী-মজনু। স্বাধীনতার পর থেকে একাডেমি চত্বরে স্বল্প পরিসরে বইমেলা শুরু হয় এবং ১৯৭৪ সাল থেকে বড়ো আকার ধারণ করে।[৩] ২০০৯-২০১১ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে একাডেমির বর্ধমান হাউজ ভবনের দ্বিতীয় ও তৃতীয় তলায় ভাষা আন্দোলন জাদুঘর স্থাপিত হয়েছে।
